Many of Browning's dramatic monologues contain moments of violence, of hidden emotions under the surface. They show many of the sides of Victorian society and behaviour which were normally not seen. In Porphyria's Lover a man speaks about the woman he loves, who is sitting on his knee, he has just killed her.
